Infertility- is that a piece in your story?

Friday, I had a beautiful conversation with a woman who turns 81 this fall.  When I asked how she was, she told me, “I am ready for heaven.”  Then she said, “I am ready to sell my jet ski. I rode it yesterday. But I am getting tired of taking care of stuff.”

81 years old, riding a jet ski, I loved that picture. And I can see her doing that, as I knew when I met this woman years ago she was on the move.

She still is.

Infertility, is that a piece in your story?

I met this determined, Jesus-loving woman over 30 years ago, when I entered an adoption agency. She was the director with a drive to save babies and to see children placed in Christian homes.

Today, in her home office, hangs a large poster board full of pictures of babies that she helped place into Christian homes. I told her on Friday- I recall the first question she ever asked me. I thought it was a great question: “Darlene, have you healed from infertility?”

Infertility, is that a piece in your story?

I honestly could answer, yes. Not because I never leaked a tear or was angry, but because I had gone to the source of my pain and disappointment in God Himself. He was blocking my plan.

Is He blocking your plan?

And little did I know back then that this one rooted Biblical principle from the book of I Samuel, found in a woman’s story named Hannah, who wrestled with infertility, would be the key principle for more than just my years of infertility. During that season of life, I knew God was taking me deep in the Word.

Read what Hannah did in I Samuel: “No, my lord, I am a woman oppressed in spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the Lord.  Do not  consider your maidservant as a worthless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and provocation.” (I Samuel 1:15-16 NASB)

I have poured out my soul before the Lord.

I wanted to be a Hannah!  And to be like her!  And that takes longer than five minutes or a year or even two. It takes time and a desire to believe that His plan is far superior. A posture of surrender, not once but over and over.

So back to the wise adoption agency director, she knew that one must heal, or it would be hard to adopt and love a child as God’s best plan, and not a second or third choice, but HIS BEST.

I believed then and still do: His best plan. But how does this Biblical principle impact our life? It is rather simple.

  1. Have you been blocked and stopped by God?
  2. Have you allowed the pus to come forth, yes or no?
  3. Or do you tap into the hidden passive-aggressive control, anger, cussing, and you shrink back or down to diminish His work and ways?
  4. If so, you are stuck in a cesspool of yuck, and GOD has a better plan for your life than yours.

Yet you have to want His Best. Do you? Get real, get raw, to grow.

Back to my phone conversation with this precious leader. We chatted. She’s known my story. We closed in prayer. And while praying, I thanked her for saying yes to our file so many years ago, which allowed me to become a Mom.  Tears leaked. We said goodbye.

Infertility and adoption was God’s best plan for my life.
