Many women live day by day riding an emotional roller coaster ride. They allow their fickle feelings to dictate and set their gauge to live by. Then they get stuck in a reactive ride that doesn’t produce the life they want.
It takes work to unlearn the emotions that trip us up. They cling to us like saran wrap.
And we must observe what is our negative emotional tag along that we state to ourselves. Is it true?
For over sixteen years of coaching women I have heard phrases like these:
- I am sad.
- I am a failure.
- I cannot do that.
- I am not good enough.
- I am an anxious person just like…
- I am frustrated.
- I am jealous.
- I am indecisive.
- I am worthless.
- I am lonely.
- It’s the way we all are in my family, critical and pessimistic.
- I am a victim.
- I don’t like myself.
- I don’t feel well.
- I am tired.
- I am old.
Instead of these robbers of life, she might want these instead: passion, mission, vision, satisfaction, joy, adventure, success, clarity, balance, focus, fun, peace, action, calmness, friendships, gratitude, and more?
- What feeling or a verbal phrase trips you up?
- What do you want instead?
For example, Madeline pointed to joy. She was tired of sadness as she had experienced tremendous loss. She longed for simple joy. So she went to work on herself. Each day she spoke, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Sadness dogged her especially during the holidays. She longed for her husband and children to be there. But he had had left her for her best friend less than a year ago. Her pain was raw.
It takes work to unlearn the emotions that trip us up. We have to want more and choose to change.
Madeline hated her sadness. So she had to work to learn to live again. Focus. Speak Truth, “I can do this. I can learn. ”
We must realize, like Madeline, we want to replace the lies of the feelings with what the Lord desires for us. He is the pivot. Run to Jesus. Live through Him, I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13 NASB). Purchase this book to read more stories like Madeline. Enable Me, Lord, to Shift, book #3
