In grief this holiday season?

If so, I am sorry.

I know several people and readers here at Hearts with a Purpose that are facing grief head on this holiday season with the loss of a precious loved one, a health issue, and/or another major concern.

I am so sorry for your pain. I will not mince words or multiple words.

Loss hurts. Period!

Grief is wretched and hard and huge and heavy. And there is no timetable. It hurts!

May this comfort you a bit from a piece of my book on grief and loss …

“The first step through grief and toward comfort is to acknowledge our pain which is not neat and pretty. It’s rather messy. Accept that truth.  It’s grueling gut-wrenching work and at times not too glorifying to God, after all the Word says, “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalm 145:18 NASB).

Our job is to summon God. He is our 9-1-1 call, our first cry for help.

David points us to our next step in Psalm 62:8b: “Pour out your heart before Him.” “Pour out” means pouring out like water from a pottery pitcher. Picture in the Old Testament the scarcity and preciousness of water being poured out. Sacrificed. And our pain is fluid that must be spilled forth to heal to feel. …  This is hard and can feel wrong and like a violation, but if we are ticked at God, He already knows it, so be honest with Him.”

The worse thing you can do is stuff the loss, the pain.

I saw and read this quote in the Christmas movie “I heard the Bells on Christmas Day.”

“There is no grief like the grief that does not speak,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Reread that again, it’s heavy. HARD. And SAD!

Speak your loss. Your pain. IT does matter. Put a voice to it as it can hurt you much longer if you do not.

It is good to grieve!

We were made not to carry emotional pain within us.

The Lord grieved and He knows it all so well.

  1. Admit you are grieving.
  2. Name what you are grieving.
  3. Talk to the Lord about your pain.

“Why are you in despair, my soul?  And why are you restless within me?
Wait for God, for I will again praise Him For the help of His presence, my God” (Psalm 43:5 NASB).
