Years ago, this very Christmas card sucked me in. And I still have the card today!
One woman believed God.
I tore off the front picture of Mary holding baby Jesus from the Christmas card. I stuck it to the right of my computer in my office so my eyes could focus on Truth—my only cheerleader, Truth. One woman believed God and carried the hope of the world.
One woman believed God.
Could I believe like Mary? I was one woman. Could I believe that God had a purpose with my life? Most definitely, not a purpose like Mary’s, yet a purpose in a good way.
I bonded with Mary.
Created in God’s image. Sinners. Women. Age was a bit different, but in love with God. I knew Mary wanted to obey God. “Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her” (Luke 1:38 NASB).
Mary had been given her life purpose assignment.
And let me add, pain with purpose! Mary would become the safe haven womb, mother to Jesus, Prince of Peace, Savior God, Creator, Sustainer and Savior of our souls. Mary said, according to your Word, so be it.
My life was so different than Mary’s. Yet, I knew pain. I was stuck. I lived in an abusive, toxic, fear breeding environment. I believed I had nothing to offer. My voice was stomped out and stepped on. Nothing of positive value was spoken to me and no one needed me. My colleagues, thankfully, affirmed me of my teaching gift!
As a child, there was a person who spoke unforgettable words of blessing in my life. It was my grandmother. She was a one room school house teacher, a wife, mom to seven children, and grandmother of 33.
Is it odd, that 27 grandchildren before me could’ve been given her middle name, but it was I? And I was the only grandchild that was a teacher. I had to believe that God must have a purposeful plan with my teaching gift and all the pain that I lived in.

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16 NASB)
