How can I become whole?

Picture an upright vacuum cleaner standing in the corner of the living room. Normally, a round cylinder runs up and down inside the machine. It’s empty, until we suck up dust, dirt, hair, or maybe our pet’s fur. Sometimes the machine gets a clog from a hairball or two in the long suction hose. So we unlatch the canister, empty the cylinder, and poke something down the hose to dislodge the hair and dust balls. Then we plug the vacuum back in to check the suction and yea! The intended function is restored, and we continue sucking up grime and grit

Picture ourselves like that vacuum cleaner, standing alone in our living room with a heart-shaped cylinder within us that runs the length of our core. We scoop up life stories that are filtered through our perceptions: rejection, self-loathing, guilt, regrets, and misunderstandings.

The debris is messy.

Our shame, lies, and self-talk clog us up. Yet, underneath the clog of our messy, broken stories, a relationship ache gnaws at us as if our soul has separated from our body. We’re starved for connection.

So how do we reconcile ourselves to our Creator’s intended relational state so we can prosper in life doing what we were created to do?

Or how do we become whole?

Reconcile: It means to restore, align, tune, conform, harmonize or synchronize. Since we’re created beings, we’re meant to be restored and reconciled to the God-man who made us.

I pray that every person who reads this devotional will grasp this Truth to the core of their soul: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:17-21 NASB).

 It’s simple.

Pull out your heart-shaped cylinder before God, confess the scum and sin from your life (anger, jealousy, addictions, remorse, dirt, broken relationships, pride, sinfulness and shame to name a few) and dump them at His feet.

Then ask Him to be your Savior and restore your heart to Him as your Reconciler and Redeemer. “Who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” Now rejoice and ask Him to be your source of power through the Holy Spirit to do the work He has created for you to do.
